Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement plans, supports children as they are learning new concepts and expectations. Whether we recognize it or not, we all benefit from positive reinforcement. In our jobs we are reinforced for exemplar work with a raise, bonus, a promotion or even a positive email. I know I feel good when I get a "great job" email. Children have the same experience.
Distance learning is new and uncharted territory for many of us. When in school, students know the expectations of class work and they know how to get help. Although it is similar work, students will experience it in a different way, which may make it difficult to complete. A positive reinforcement plan will help students be flexible and except a new way of learning and it may motivate students to complete the work.

Sample Reinforcement Plan
- Ms. MacDonald will earn a check mark for each work activity she completes.
- When she has 5 check marks she has earned a trade in (see below for examples of trade ins). For older kids I would allow them to bank their 5 check marks and let them earn 5 more and then have a second level of trade ins.
- Once a check mark is earned it should not be taken away.
- Example of work activities: completing one assignment, a math paper, reading a picture book, or 2 chapters in books for older kids, setting up for school work and putting away school supplies.
- Examples of trade ins: playing a board game, outside play time, a get out of one chore pass
- Second level trade ins: No chores for a day pass, extra screen time, picking a movie to watch
- Trade ins should include preferred activites that will motivate the child.
- A visual chart should be used, so the child is able to see when they will get to the next trade in.
